The study of Economics provides students with valuable skills that serve them well across a wide range of careers. A Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics enables graduates to pursue diverse career paths in fields such as economic forecasting, policy analysis, financial markets and institutions, and public policy. The undergraduate program also offers a strong foundation for graduate studies in Economics, Finance, Business Administration, Law, Political Science, Political Economy, and Public Administration. Students who choose to concentrate in Business Economics explore areas including labour economics, game theory, public economics, real estate economics, and international economics, among other specialized subjects. Economics as a discipline is concerned with the fundamental principle that human wants are unlimited while the resources available to satisfy them are limited. Every economic system must therefore determine how to allocate these scarce resources—deciding what to produce and how to distribute the resulting output among its population. The social organization and economic mechanisms required to address these challenges are highly complex, particularly in decentralized, private-enterprise economies. The discipline of Economics seeks to explain how economies function, assess their performance, and identify ways to improve their efficiency and equity. Notably, Economics is the only Social Science discipline recognized by the awarding of a Nobel Prize. In addressing these issues, Economics employs a distinctive analytical approach. The Department of Economics aims to cultivate in students the ability to “think like an economist.” Achieving this objective involves developing strong analytical reasoning and familiarity with the tools of economic analysis. Through this process, students enhance their problem-solving and creative skills, deepening their understanding of contemporary economic issues while improving their ability to anticipate the outcomes of economic changes in a constantly evolving world. Ultimately, the program prepares students for present challenges and equips them for future opportunities.
